Cold-Snap Checklist: Keep Pets Warm & Safe |
Winter’s first chill is here — make sure your furry family members are cozy, healthy, and hazard-free before the next front rolls in. |
When the temperature dips, our pets feel it first — especially seniors, short-haired breeds, and outdoor cats. A little prep now keeps tails wagging all winter long.
Here’s your River Valley cold-snap checklist:
🏠 Indoors Is Best
If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for them. Bring outdoor pets inside during freezing nights. Keep beds off cold floors, away from drafts, and near cozy blankets.
🔥 Heat Smart
Never leave space heaters unattended or use open-flame candles near pets. Consider ceramic heaters with tip-over protection and keep cords out of reach.
🧤 Protect Those Paws
Salt, ice, and rough pavement can crack paw pads. Use dog booties or a paw balm, and always wipe paws after walks to remove ice melt and debris.
🐱 Shelter for Outdoor Cats
For community or barn cats, build simple shelters using plastic tubs or foam coolers lined with straw — not blankets, which trap moisture.
💧 Hydrate & Fuel Up
Cold weather burns extra calories. Make sure pets have fresh water (not frozen bowls!) and a little more food if they spend time outdoors.
🏥 Plan Ahead
Winter is prime time for joint stiffness and dry skin. Schedule wellness checks early, and stock up on vet-approved moisturizers or supplements.
